As a pediatric physical therapist I have been able to combine my passion for the art and science of physical therapy and the joy of working with children and their families. I graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Madison in 2007 with a Master of Physical therapy degree.   I have worked with children of all ages, various diagnoses, and impairments.  I completed my undergraduate degree in exercise science allowing me the knowledge of the effects of exercise and intervention at the physiological level and the resulting impact at functional levels.  I am continually learning and seek to learn from many resources including other therapists, literature, families and children.

During therapy sessions my focus is to incorporate play to make treatment enjoyable and challenging to improve a child’s function. I strive to focus the treatment interventions around the child’s interests and abilities, yet making therapy challenging to allow progression toward their goals.  I believe family education and involvement in their child’s therapy is crucial to improve a child’s abilities.  I seek to educate families about their child’s abilities, disabilities, strengths, and impairments to work together as a team to determine home carry over and achieve goals.

I believe to provide the best quality care health care providers must work together with the child and their family.  In this respect I also feel that learning from a child and their family is integral to providing the best quality care.

As an experienced Physical Therapist I understand the most important thing that I do is educate. It is my job to help the child and their caregivers understand how their motor system is affected by their medical challenges. After 26 years in this field I have seen patients grow into adults and can help families understand the long-term effects motor compensations may have on the boney, muscular and joint structure of their loved one at different stages of development. The overall goal in therapy for complex cases is to provide the minimal amount of therapy to promote the maximum level of functional independence while allowing the least amount of pathology. Of course the minimal amount of therapy can be accomplished when the family is involved in therapy sessions as well as home carryover. It is my goal that the caregivers never lose sight of being family first and providing needed exercises and stretching as a part of their daily life.

At Ozaukee Therapy services I am considered a master level clinician in providing therapy to pediatric patients with various diagnoses from developmental delays, orthopedic deficits and neurological impairments. It is my belief that having motor challenges during growth years can profoundly interfere with how the brain integrates the multitude of inputs received from all parts of the body and their environment. Therefore in addition to my focus on strengthening and alignment, I treat the whole child challenging them to rely on their entire sensory motor system to master greater variety of motor control. By setting up the environment to challenge the child, I can provide less hands on assist while facilitation the child to achieve greater awareness of the control they can elicit and learn to rely on for doing the things they want to do. This is a recipe for success in gaining functional control as well as staying highly motivated to work hard on learning difficult control in therapy sessions.

Outside of the clinic I have spent a great deal of time lecturing throughout the United States and Canada for continuing education for therapists and parents. I have produced 12 educational DVD’s on treatment to help parents and therapists understand and treat a variety of motor challenges. My book on treating using the therapy ball has been in print since 1991 and continues to provide therapists with strategies for treating. Besides teaching courses on using the ball in therapy I teach a number of courses about treating hypotonia. In the past several years I have had several parents attend 2 and 3 day courses on this subject to further understand their own child’s specific challenges. In addition I have many therapists and parents contact me via the internet through my web site at www.barbarahypes.com. Ozaukee Therapy Services has allowed me to work as a mentoring therapist providing me time to work directly with therapists and their clients to help focus on moving this clinic into a center for cutting edge therapy services.

I have over 22 years of pediatric physical therapy experience after graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Therapy from the University of WI-Madison in 1984. My experience includes working with individuals from newborn through young adulthood. I have vast experience with infants and children with a wide variety of diagnoses including prematurity, torticollis, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, Hypotonia, Down Syndrome, and a variety of other syndromes, orthopedic issues and developmental delays. Other areas that I feel comfortable addressing are adaptive equipment, seating options and orthotics. I have learned so much over the years from OT’s, speech pathologists, and special education teachers that I feel that I have the expertise to look at the whole child to more specifically address PT goals. My continuing education includes several advanced courses on Neurodevelopmental Treatment in the areas of gait, rib cage and upper extremity, baby treatment and advanced problem solving. I also have taken recent courses on implementing yoga, therapy ball techniques, Pilates and kinesiotaping into my treatment plan.

I enjoy working with the entire family on creating a plan for each child. I feel that a parent is a child’s best advocate and listen closely to what concerns and hopes each parent has for their child. I have a compassionate and gentle approach to treatment and enjoy developing a close rapport with each child and their family.

As a pediatric physical therapist, I find incredible joy and fulfillment in working with children and their families. I graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Madison in 2005 with a Master of Physical Therapy degree. I have worked with children with a variety of diagnoses and impairments in both the Birth to Three Program and at an out-patient clinic. I completed the Waisman Center’s Interdisciplinary Training Program in Early Childhood. I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Spanish, enabling me to effectively communicate with Spanish speaking families. I strongly value education and am committed to continually learning from other therapist, research, children, and their families.

I enjoy working with children of all ages, from infants to adolescents. By using play, I strive to make therapy fun while still challenging. I seek to incorporate interventions in a way that is intriguing to the child and that matches the family’s goals and lifestyle. It is my goal as a physical therapist to focus on the positive and to use a child’s abilities and interests to discover what they are capable of and how they can attain it.

My focus during treatment is to maximize a child’s independence and participation in life’s daily activities by restoring, promoting, and maintaining function with optimal alignment. I believe motivating and encouraging children and their families is an integral aspect of therapy. I seek to educate families about their child’s disability and impairments and work together to develop ideas and home programs to ensure carryover of the child’s goals. I believe the best patient care can only be provided when health care providers work together as a team with the child and their family at the center.

I graduated with my Masters in Physical Therapy from Concordia University in 2000. Since then, I have worked with the pediatric population. I love working with children and encouraging them to do their best. It is important to keep therapy fun while pushing them to work their hardest. I enjoy working with infants to help them develop movement patterns that promote natural progression of physical abilities. I enjoy working with toddlers and school age children to help them develop strength, flexibility, and muscle control needed to perform activities that make their daily life as independent as possible as well as fun. I also enjoy working with adolescents to help them better understand their bodies so they realize that they are capable of being active participants in improving their physical abilities. I feel that pediatric physical therapy is dynamic, progressive, challenging, educational and FUN. I love being a physical therapist!
