Lisa Burger – Occupational Therapist
I am a graduate of Western Michigan University practicing in the field of pediatric occupational therapy since 1996. My experience has been in a variety of pediatric settings including outpatient clinics, school settings, pediatric skilled care centers, Illinois Birth to Three Program and management of a large outpatient therapy clinic. I have been involved in research studies and program development related to play and social communication skills in children with autism. I have specialized knowledge and training in the areas of sensory integration, SOS feeding approach, Neuro-Developmental Treatment, Therapeutic Listening, handwriting interventions and other manual therapy approaches.
My goal is to use my skills and knowledge to assist children and their family to develop the skills they need to be successful during play, socialization, activities of daily living and learning experiences. By using purposeful and motivating activities, I can help enhance sensory processing skills, parent-child interactions, organizational skills, motor planning, visual motor skills, and play skills. I love my work with children as it is the most rewarding experience one can have during their lifetime.

I have worked in the field of Occupational Therapy for over 25 years. Pediatrics is the area I have specialized in specifically because I am awed by children. Children have a remarkable ability to meet the challenges that life gives them. Their attitudes and outlook on life inspires me. I continue to learn many life lessons from the children and families that I have had the privilege to work with.
Throughout the years that I have been practicing occupational therapy I have worked in a variety of settings: neonatal intensive care units, follow-up clinics, acute inpatient programs, rehabilitation programs and outpatient pediatric therapy clinics. I have also worked with adults diagnosed with various neuromotor conditions which contribute to my understanding of life with a disability across the lifespan.
My philosophy of intervention is to provide treatment that elicits dynamic function (I believe in getting the children to work hard!). We learn what we actively participate in. I also know that education regarding disability is critical. When families and individuals understand as much as possible about the issues they are facing, they find creative solutions. I am here to provide information that will help families make informed decisions that work for them.
I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Therapy from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee in 1981. I have a passion for learning so I have taken numerous continuing education courses. In 2001, I completed a training process to become a Neuro-Developmental Treatment Instructor in Pediatrics. This allows me the opportunity to provide continuing education courses to teach the Neuro-developmental treatment approach to Occupational, and Physical therapists, and therapy assistants, as well as Speech-Language Pathologists. I have also taken many courses on sensory processing, including the sensory integration theory course, and over the past few years have taught a course on Integrating NDT and sensory strategies in pediatrics. The courses and experiences I seek have helped me keep an open mind and made me aware that therapy, just like life, is an exciting journey.
